World hotel of the month

Fancy spending your holiday in a hole in the wall? Contrary to what you may think, it could well be one of the most beautiful, romantic - and comfortable - places you'll ever stay.

The Cave Hotel in Cappadocia, Turkey, is an exquisitely restored 18-room troglodyte cave house. Located in a restored 1,000-year-old Byzantine monastic retreat, it offers all mod cons - wireless internet access, en suite bathrooms, etc - but prides itself on being eco-friendly.

Heating comes from solar panels, electricity is from hydro-electric sources, and only local materials were used in the renovation. And thanks to a volcanic rock called tufa, the rooms stay at the same temperature - between 17 and 20 degrees Celsius - throughout the year.

Besides admiring the unique surroundings, there's plenty more to see and do at the hotel. For example, you can sign up for a Turkish cuisine course and learn how to create traditional six-course Cappadocian feasts with organic produce in the hotel kitchen.

Or experience the local agricultural activities such as drying apricots or harvesting apples, tomatoes, mulberries and grapes from the organic farmland. You will also have the chance to learn home-style wine-making, how to cook grape jam and how to bake bread in the stone oven.

And your visit wouldn't be complete without watching the Whirling Dervishes perform their mystical meditational dance. A branch of Dervishes practice their religion in the nearby ancient Selcukide Caravansary, where spectators are welcomed.

Oh, and if you're looking for an unusual wedding location, you can even get married in the historical cave church - and spend your first night as husband and wife in one of the specially prepared honeymoon rooms.

Tempted? Rooms sleep up to four people and cost from £75 per night on a bed and breakfast basis. There are direct flights between Istanbul and Cappadocia - and the area is also served by local buses. To book, go to www.responsibletravel.com.
