Restaurant of the month
This month sees the arrival of a brand new bar-restaurant in London's Sloane Square - the perfect place to relax and recharge your batteries after a hard day's shopping on the King's Road. But don't assume you need to be super-rich to eat out in the capital's most upmarket area: yes, you may rub shoulders with a few Sloane rangers or Chelsea footballers, but the owners of The Botanist aim to relax the rules of fine dining - and that means relaxing hiked-up prices, too.
This perfect-for-people-watching establishment is the brainchild of Tom and Ed Martin, whose renowned gastro-empire includes a handful of other celebrated London eateries including The Well in Clerkenwell and The Gun in Docklands.
Named in honour of naturalist Sir Hans Sloane, The Botanist will draw together foodie influences from across the globe, while remaining essentially British at heart. In a room decorated with hand-painted illustrations from Sloane's Caribbean explorations, diners will enjoy appetisers such as white asparagus with cèpes and fried egg; salad of sautéed sweet bread, crayfish and artichoke crisps with sherry dressing; or seared foie gras, smoked duck and blood orange salad with caramelised shallots, fried quail egg and verjuice jus.
Mouthwatering mains include free-range organic baby spring chicken breast and confit leg with caramelised shallot tart and foie gras velouté; Gloucestershire Old Spot port cutler with baked stuffed apple, black pudding, Pommery mustard mash and cider jus; and assiette of spring lamb with caramelised sweet bread ravioli and onion marmalade.
And for dessert? You can tuck into Eccles cakes with Earl Grey tea custard, or - our favourite - pecan and banana pudding with chocolate ice cream. But the thing that's really got us licking our lips in anticipation is The Botanist's signature tipple, Jamaica 1726. The ingredients? Chocolate flakes melted into steamed organic milk, stirred with Jamaican rum, dark crème de cacao and hazelnut syrup, served hot with almond and more chocolate flakes over floated fresh whipped cream.
Prices for main courses start from £6. To find out more, go to www.thebotanistonsloanesquare.com.
