As the old song (almost) goes: there'll be foodies over the White Cliffs of Dover tomorrow, just you wait and see... And a brand new restaurant, The Bay, has got both locals and visitors licking their lips accordingly in the Kent seaside village of St Margaret's-at-Cliffe.

Situated in the recently refurbished and renamed White Cliffs Hotel, The Bay is the brainchild of celebrated hotelier and restaurateur Gavin Oakley - the man behind the nearby award-winning Wallett's Court Country House Hotel, which has become a favourite with visiting celebrities.

His team's mission? "We want to capture the essence of life in coastal England by introducing a fresh, contemporary look and feel that will appeal to a wide audience," says Gavin. "The Bay is already very popular, and we hope to build on that success by introducing innovative new menu ideas which reflect our passion for locally sourced, organic, free-range produce."

A quick glance at the menu is enough to get your mouth watering. Sample starters include pea and nettle soup with black pig pancetta and nutmeg cream, Sussex goat's cheese fritters with beetroot pickle and rocket salad, or brown crab with walnut, apple and celery in a soft egg dressing.

And for main course, you can tuck into char-grilled 28-day matured Alkham beef with chips, roasted free-range chicken with basil, goat's cheese and braised lentils, or Kentish asparagus with leek and potato pave and mustard seed and carrot jam. Hungry yet?

However, the menu items that really got us rushing to book a table were the desserts. Take your pick from bread and butter pudding with hand-cut orange marmalade and custard, Kentish strawberry sabl é with balsamic ice cream, or our favourite, Montezuma's bitter chocolate and whisky cream. Sheer bliss!

The hotel and restaurant are centred around a traditional Kentish inn, parts of which date back to Elizabethan times. If you visit while it's still summer, you can soak up the sun in the rose-filled walled garden - but later in the year, you may prefer to snuggle up in front of a roaring log fire instead.
