This month's must-have trend
Last year, purple reigned. This summer, our favourite clothes stores have been awash with yellow. But there's one bright and beautiful shade that's always guaranteed to be hot, hot, hot - and that's red. In fact, many fashion-conscious celebrities have been eschewing every other colour of the rainbow, opting instead to showcase their own brand of scarlet fever.
Some examples? Kelly Osbourne was recently spotted leaving Radio One sporting a glamorous red shift frock and coat, with a matching bow in her hair to complete the look. Charlize Theron opted for a red floral evening dress with glamorous scarlet stole at the Moscow Film Festival. And Sienna Miller chose a stunning red Fifties-style prom dress for the London premiere of The Edge of Love.
So what are the rules for wearing red? Well, it's worth bearing in mind that it makes a very bold statement, so it's not necessarily the colour to choose if you're hoping to blend into the background. But it's great for summer evenings - and no self-respecting glamourpuss should head off on holiday without packing at least one red frock in her suitcase.
Don't go for anything too fussy or frilly – instead look for flattering styles in cool fabrics. For a simple wardrobe staple, we love BYoung's basic jersey dress (£17.99; www.jemboutique.com), which can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion. Or take a look at Avoca Anthology's Minnie dress, which is softened by small white polka dots and floral stitching detail on the hem (£60; www.jemboutique.com).
For less dressy occasions, why not pair a red T-shirt with jeans? Check out www.moreTvicar.com for fun picture and slogan T-shirts - or try Gap or Marks & Spencer for plainer versions.
Alternatively, as always, you can simply give a nod to the trend through your shoes and accessories. Try Accessorize and Rok Chix (www.rokchix.com) for cute red bangles, bracelets and earrings; invest in a pair of Redfoot APS red folding pumps (£25; www.redfootrevolution.co.uk); or just take a leaf from Kelly O's book and tie a red ribbon in your hair.
