This month's must-have trend
After a long, cold winter, nothing is more likely to put a smile on our faces than a carpet of spring flowers. But this season's most welcome blooms haven't just been in our parks and gardens: florals were big news on the catwalk, too, with beautiful daffodils, roses and crocuses adorning everything from belts and bags to dresses and jackets.
Even celebrity designer Roberto Cavalli set aside his usual 'out-there glamour' in favour of dreamy, romantic florals - covering floor-skimming frilled frocks with big, bold blooms in purples and pinks. Marc Jacobs adopted a similar theme at the spring/summer shows - sending models down the catwalk in stunning flower-bedecked gowns.
Celebrities who have been quick to adopt the trend include the usually dressed-down Lily Allen, who looked absolutely divine in a pink and mauve floral cocktail frock at the recent Elle Style Awards.
But while this season's take on florals is fresh and feminine, subtlety isn't an absolute necessity: we're talking big, big flowers in bright, bright colours. Warehouse's silk floral dress (£60; www.warehouse.co.uk) pairs pink, white and yellow blooms with contrasting black borders. Or try Per Una at Marks & Spencer (www.marksandspencer.com) for bold and beautiful sunflower prints.
Meanwhile, Spanish fashion store Mango (www.mangoshop.com) has unveiled a colourful collection of floral frocks for spring/summer - ranging from multicoloured floor-skimming gowns to above-the-knee little black dresses adorned with a bold cerise and orange flower motif.
However, if you'd prefer to wait a while before stepping out in full-on flowers, you can still give a nod to the trend through your accessories. Try Ruby + Ed (www.rubyanded.co.uk) for a brand new range of sandals and mules, with floral motifs ranging from subtle to not-so-subtle.
Accessorize (www.accessorize.co.uk) does some great belts with enamel flower clasps, a brilliant way to update a plain dress: Kylie Minogue is a big fan of this look. Meanwhile, pretty much every high-street store has its own take on the floral bag: colourful patterns, cute embellishments and petal motifs have all been a huge hit. Blooming gorgeous!
