This month's high-street hottie
It's known as the decade that style forgot - but the fashion world certainly doesn't seem able to forget the 70s. Instead, many of this season's hottest looks give much more than a passing nod to some of the key styles from that period - with patchwork, florals and hippie chic much in evidence on the high street. You can almost smell the patchouli oil!
So how do you bring the 70s look up to date? The trick is to blend it in with other styles - without going OTT. For example, flowing frocks - and even kaftans - work well if you accessorise with this season's layered bangles, rather than full-on boho "hippie" jewellery.
Alternatively, go for separates in a 70s style and shape but with a modern fabric or print. We love the animal-print kimono by Mamas and Papas (£35; www.mamasandpapas.com) - an easy way to mix trends and create your own personal look.
Likewise, remember florals are big, big news this summer - so this is a great way to wear that 70s staple, the maxi-dress. Don't be shy: take a tip from stars such as Cat Deeley and Gwen Stefani, and go for bold, bright prints.
Meanwhile, patchwork seems to have thrown off its "hippie" tag and made its way on to the catwalks this season. Feeling brave? Primark does a folk-style frock that's cute for festivals and picnics (£15; go to www.primark.co.uk to find a store near you). But if you'd prefer to keep the look more low-key, search out patchwork bags instead: try Accessorize for its pretty Origami bag (£30).
And finally ... another 70s look - the floppy hat - is big news at the moment, thanks to celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez. Most department stores sell a good range, and they're a great way to protect yourself from the sun this summer. Happy shopping!
