This month's beauty indulgence
What do Jennifer Lopez, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jada Pinkett-Smith have in common - aside from being super-glamorous Hollywood stars, that is? Apparently, they're all fans of the latest über-indulgent skincare product to find its way across the Atlantic: SkinVenom.
This must-have cream reportedly sold out within seconds when it first went on sale in the US last year, and more than 350 women had added their names to the waiting list in the UK before it had even been publicised on these shores.
So what's all the fuss about? Well, SkinVenom is being touted as an anti-ageing skincare breakthrough that's set to challenge Botox - with absolutely no needles in sight. Its secret ingredient?
Actually, there are four of them: Gamma amino buryric acid to encourage nerve relaxation; Thassaline to inhibit muscle contraction; Syn®-ake, a harmless skin relaxant which mimics the effect of snake venom to minimise muscle movement; and Calmosensine, which triggers feelings of wellbeing and happiness.
Research suggests this unique complex can break the skin's 'memory' - its inclination to wrinkle in the same places with each frown, smile or facial contraction. It works by controlling the skin's nerve endings, and by slowing reflexive facial muscle movements to stop skin contracting in areas where wrinkles most commonly form - around the eyes, forehead and mouth.
'It makes sense that if you can stop the skin contracting in the normal places and force it to use new muscles, the facial pattern can be broken,' says skincare expert Dr Rowan Campbell.
Sounds fabulous, doesn't it? But, as with all the best beauty indulgences, SkinVenom comes with a hefty price tag. A 50ml pot is £180, while a 15ml pump costs a slightly less eye-watering £69. Available in selected department stores and salons nationwide: call 0800 838670 for stockist details.
