In 1995 the E-Class was one of the first cars to feature xenon headlamps, while in 2003 an active lighting function was made available. Responding to driving and weather conditions, the new headlamps cast a wider beam to improve visibility on country roads and around town. This increases the driver's range of vision by around 10 metres.
The Intelligent Light System also features an automatic two-stage motorway mode. The output of the bi-xenon lamps is increased to improve the illumination, while at high speed the range of the nearside headlamp is also increased to spread across the entire road and as far as 120 metres ahead. In corners the lights turn in the direction of the wheel, providing 90% better visibility around bends. This pioneering Intelligent Light System is available as an option across the entire E-Class range.
It's not just the headlamps that offer superior illumination and improved safety. The brake lights too, have been improved in the all new generation E-Class. Flashing when emergency braking, they warn following drivers more effectively to prevent rear-end collisions. In tests carried out by Mercedes, drivers react 0.2 seconds quicker in these circumstances, reducing brake distances by around 5.5 metres.
They're just a small part of the new advanced braking system incorporated in the new generation E-Class. This includes Adaptive Brake, a system that offers a Hold and Hill Holder function to prevent the car rolling in traffic or when moving away on hills. With the additional function of a brake drying feature, which applies light pressure to the discs to keep them clear of grease and moisture. It also includes BAS brake assist, which primes the brake system when the driver releases the accelerator suddenly and assists in providing maximum braking pressure. All these ground-breaking systems work unobtrusively, allowing you to enjoy the excellent E-Class driving experience to the full in safety and comfort. Ensuring maximum feedback and an even more rewarding driving experience in the new generation E-Class is Direct Control. It combines a number of new features, including modifications to the suspension, manual transmission and steering. These changes have increased control and feel, without being detrimental to the unrivalled long-distance comfort and refinement of the E-Class. The steering now has a more direct ratio, while reconfigured spring link bearings increase cornering ability providing a more neutral stance. On manual models the gearshift linkage has been improved to provide a more positive, faster shift.
That enhanced six-speed manual transmission is fitted as standard to the E 200 Kompressor and E 220 CDI models. They're just two models in the extensive E-Class range, which incorporates five petrol and three diesel engines. All have been improved appreciably. While fuel consumption generally remains constant, the engine range develops up to 26 per cent more output and 18 per cent more torque than before. Heading the new line-up is the E63 AMG which is fitted with a naturally aspirated V8 engine delivering 514hp and maximum torque of 630Nm making it the most powerful E-Class ever. It has the ability to reach 62mph in just 4.5 seconds.
