NEW RENAULT MEGANE
We’ve all done it. We’ve been certain we’d never do things differently – and then, sure enough, a few years and a billion thoughts later we firmly hold an entirely different view. It’s the theme of Renault’s latest advertising campaign for their new Mégane. It holds a mirror up to everyone, and challenges our views on life, the universe – and Renault.
But what’s the substance behind this? Is it just mere advertising spin, or is there a real point to be made here? Well, come with us on an imaginary test drive. Here are the keys – or rather the keyless card that opens the car up as you draw near. Let’s explore.
In the eye of the beholder
Sometimes a piece of beautiful design just stands out. You’ve heard of kerb appeal, the indefinable must-have that pundits on property programmes are always talking about? Well, it might not be a house or a flat, but new Mégane has it. In spades.
It’s in the macro and the micro, the whole and the detail. The poised, hunched stance, enhanced by flared wheel arches. The fluid, aerodynamic design that projects a sense of purpose and propulsion. And it’s the same from every angle. You can see it in the tight shut lines, the quality feel and reassuring weight of the door as you open it up, the quality dash and controls. Time to climb aboard.
Let it sink in
Now you’re behind the wheel, take a moment to absorb your surroundings: the innovative digital/analogue display that gives you all the information you need at a glance; the soft-touch materials; the light, airy cabin. Everything comes together to cosset and soothe you through the miles. It’s a good place to be.
Then you notice the standard equipment: air conditioning, ESP, six airbags and electric windows and door mirrors. And as a Dynamique driver you can play with even more kit, like automatic windscreen wipers and lights, Bluetooth with MP3 connection, and more. But enough hanging about. Time to go.
Hit the road
Now you’re on the move, you’ll notice a couple of things. If you missed the streamlined look that was created by laser welding, you won’t miss the effect: cabin noise is cut right down as the smooth shape of new Mégane slices through the air unimpeded.
You’ll notice new Mégane’s precise and responsive electric power steering, too, and its dynamic cornering and roadholding. And the refined, yet gutsy powerplants that feel bigger than they are, while delivering smaller engine consumption figures. The overriding impression is one of refinement: it’s at the very heart of new Mégane.
It’s a car that lets you trust your instincts. New Mégane isn’t just designed to make a good first impression. It’s designed to make a lasting one.
